Davenport, development and the way forward

Meet Jason Davenport Carlton Media's Grace Phillips sat down for a chat with our new development coach Jason Davenport.

A FEW years ago, Jason Davenport inherited the nickname 'Eagle Killer' - a cheeky throwback to a couple of standout performances against West Coast, when the then Port Adelaide player twice earned the maximum three Brownlow votes for his troubles.

Question is, does the 28-game former Port winger turned Carlton development coach still answer to the moniker?

“I smirk to it,” came the measured reply.

“A couple of my better games happened to be against them (the Eagles), but I’m someone who easily takes the nickname in the light manner for which it was intended. I embrace it with a smirk.”

Davenport’s League career ended with his delisting at Port after three seasons to the end of 2011. Originally taken by Geelong as a rookie in 2006, the boy who first chased the...

O’Shea became the first Northern player drafted to the AFL Blues since 2006, and the first draftee from the club since 2013.

With O’Shea’s achievements in 2017 speaking for themselves, the senior coach said the new Blue made an immediate impact when arriving at Northern.

“Everyone that is connected to our club at the Northern Blues is absolutely thrilled for Cameron,” Fraser said.

“We couldn’t have asked for any more from him since day one: he invested in all areas of our club from the start and he backed it up with his performances each week.

The 21-year-old, who played 17 games in two seasons at Gold Coast, arrives as a ready-made recruit and is ready to get stuck into training duties with his fellow recruits.

Where Garlett was once the No.15 pick in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft, he was the Blues' 78th pick last Friday night.

Shaw a Carlton rookie

Rookie Selection | Matt Shaw Watch highlights from Carlton's selection from the NAB AFL Rookie Draft, Matt Shaw.

CARLTON has recruited former Gold Coast Suns player Matt Shaw in the 2017 NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

Taken with pick No.3, the hard-running wingman is known for his ability to break the lines and take the game on.

As an access pick for the Suns in the 2010 national draft, Shaw spent seven seasons on the Gold Coast and notched up 102 senior appearances.

After making his debut in Round 4 against Melbourne in 2011, the 25-year-old’s trademark golden locks were often seen zipping through the midfield and carrying the ball along the wing.

Dow 'stoked' to land at Carlton

Paddy Dow highlights | Pick 3 Watch number three pick Paddy Dow's highlights.

THE 2017 AFL National Draft, headlined by the recruiting of Paddy Dow at selection No.3, also completes a personal three for Stephen Silvagni, who vowed that Carlton would land high-end talent through the 2015, ’16 and ’17 drafts.

“We have had a lot of list changes over the past three years, 42 changes in three years and we need some stability in our list now,” said Silvagni on draft night, “so I wouldn’t imagine we would be making a lot of changes at the end of next season.

“We said we would go to three drafts, we have gone to three drafts now and we need to build some stability and keep these boys and get them playing together.”

For vastly different, but no less weighty reasons, Dow has also reflected on the poignancy of the moment - when his name was called at the Sydney Showground, in the presence...
