Brayshaw’s family link to no.8

Shaun McManus tells of his hilarious link with the Brayshaw family.

Freo legend Shaun McManus has a story for every occasion, and Freo’s former no.8 delivered another classic tale when presenting new draftee Andrew Brayshaw with his new playing number.

McManus was joined by Garrick Ibbotson at the presentation, with the fellow Life Member on hand to present Adam Cerra with the no.5 playing number.

Brayshaw will wear the number McManus wore for 228 games from 1995 to 2008, with another Life Member in Nick Suban playing in the no.8 for 156 games from 2009 to 2017.

McManus said he knew Brayshaw’s father Mark from when Mark worked at Freo in a financial role ahead of the club’s inaugural season, however, McManus was almost pained to admit that pair also had another encounter a month prior to McManus’s arrival at the club.

“Mark reminds me of this regularly,” McManus said.

“I’m not...

SA draftees see Neale setting the bar

New draftee Adam Cerra speaks to media on Monday.

When looking at Freo’s best draft bargains, Lachie Neale will always be involved in the conversation.

It took five seasons for Neale to go from a fourth round selection in 2011 to a convincing winner of the Doig Medal in 2016, followed by a runner-up finish in 2017.

In the wake of the National and Rookie drafts, Fremantle’s development coaches will be working hard to give the club’s newest draftees the best chance to be known as a ‘draft bargain’ in the future, with five players selected between the fourth and fifth rounds and two in the rookie draft.

It’s fitting that Neale’s name has cropped up numerous times as Freo’s draftees discuss who they look up to.

Just like Fremantle did with Neale in 2011, Freo used their later selections and the rookie draft to select two hard-bodied midfielders from South Australia in Mitch Crowden...

Banfield turns disappointment into opportunity

Bailey Banfield speaks to media on Tuesday.

As the AFL’s draft class of 2016 celebrated their rise into the top echelon of the national game, Bailey Banfield was left with his AFL dream unfulfilled.

Instead of dwelling on what he was missing, the then 18-year-old got straight to work with WAFL side Claremont and achieved an incredible amount in his extra year in the State league.

Banfield started his WAFL pre-season within hours of finding out he would not play AFL in 2017 and gave everything to the Tigers this year, winning the club’s best and fairest as a 19-year-old.

It all came while completing the second year of his economics and finance degree at UWA and coaching the Swanbourne Tigers Junior Football Club’s year nine side to a thrilling premiership win.

At the end of the season, Banfield was rewarded for his development with a rookie draft selection with Fremantle and was...

Champion Data sees rookie as a draft bargain

Stefan Giro speaks to media less than 24 hours after being drafted.

Based on Champion Data’s assessment, Freo may have emerged from the rookie draft with a bargain in Stefan Giro.

The AFL’s official number crunchers see the game differently to recruiters, coaches and fans, rating players purely by their statistics on the field and not by any other external factors.

Champion Data highlighted that the Norwood prospect averaged more than 99 SuperCoach points in the SANFL under-18s, the SANFL reserves in 2016 and 2017 and at the 2017 U18 National Championships for South Australia.

As a result, Champion Data rated Giro as the 25th best prospect in the draft.

Giro also impressed outside of the raw numbers that Champion Data would have used to rate their prospects.

At the SA draft combine, the 18-year-old rated first in the endurance-based yo-yo test (level 22.3) and in the top five in...

Meet Freo's black belt

Watch Tom North's first media conference as a Freo Docker.

While new Freo draftee Tom North plans to continue using the skills he’s developed as a black belt in karate, he has assured his future AFL opponents that this won’t involve any physical confrontations.

Instead, the strong-bodied midfielder hopes he can worry the opposition with ability to accumulate possession while using his strong game sense.

“I started karate when I first started footy and I did it for about 10 years,” North said.

“It’s something that I loved doing and it helps out a lot with balance and discipline. It’s been massive for my footy.”

While the infamous ‘Demolition Derby’ is now 18 seasons in the past, North gave a perfect deadpanned response when asked if he thinks his abilities were a pre-requisite for coming up against the Eagles.

“I’m not really sure if that is,” said North as the media laughed in...

From rivals to teammates

Lloyd Meek chats to the media after arriving at Fremantle.

In 2016, Sean Darcy and Lloyd Meek competed for rival clubs in the TAC Cup.

With his selection at no.69 in the 2017 NAB AFL National Draft, Meek is now teaming up with Darcy to form part of the next generation of Freo’s ruckmen.

Both are 19, with Meek drafted as a mature ager from the Greater Western Victoria Rebels after missing out on selection in 2016.

Meek admitted to being disappointed missing out on the AFL ranks while seeing Darcy flourish at an AFL club, but is now delighted to team up alongside his fellow country Victorian.

“Sean’s from the Geelong Falcons, who are rivals to us Rebels,” Meek said.

“I’ve had a few good matches with him and I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to also play with him through the Vic Country program.

“I plan to be an absolute sponge for my first year and I’m just going to learn as...
