Youngsters bond in three-day camp

Matthew Egan: David Neitz Academy Matthew Egan talks to Melbourne Media about the David Neitz Academy which took place in Torquay

MELBOURNE’S three-day camp to Torquay has been hailed a success by club.

The Demons took 11 of their youngsters – all part of the David Neitz Academy (DNA) – to the seaside town from Tuesday to Thursday, which combined relationship building and training.

Head of development Matthew Egan said it was a great opportunity for several of the club’s coaches, and fitness and conditioning staff, to spend greater time with Melbourne’s emerging players.

“It’s been good fun. We’ve trained out at Torquay footy club and did a gym workout,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“On Tuesday, the boys got down and did a really good session about getting to know each other and then spent time together and we went out for dinner.”

Harley Balic, Oskar Baker, Lochie Filipovic,...

Balic 'finding his feet'

MELBOURNE recruit Harley Balic will be given time to fit into his new surroundings at the Demons with his new club conscious of how much football he missed during his time with Fremantle.

Balic, who turns 21 in January, played four games in two seasons on the Dockers' list, battling a wrist injury in his first season and twice being granted personal leave during 2017.

Desperately missing home, Balic requested a trade away from Fremantle with Melbourne parting with pick No.66 in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft for the Victorian.

The Demons secured Balic, who stands at 187cm and 82kg, on a one-year contract.

"Harley's finding his feet in the footy club," Demons assistant coach Ben Mathews told AFL.com.au

"He's settling back into Melbourne, he's got his family over here, his girlfriend.

"It's never easy changing clubs and especially a young player who has had to go through some...

Viney gives Dees an early Christmas present

MELBOURNE co-captain Jack Viney will resume training with the main group in early January, after he was given the all clear by his foot specialist.

Viney missed the final two games of the 2017 season with a foot injury, and was in a moon boot for most of the off-season.

The midfielder has been on a modified training program since the Demons' pre-season began, but Melbourne assistant coach Troy Chaplin said Viney was expected to rejoin the main group after the Christmas break.

"He went and saw a specialist early this week and got the all clear," Chaplin told SEN radio.

"[The specialist] is happy with how it's going and how he's tracking.

"He's a competitive little bugger, Jack, he probably wants to do more than he's allowed to, so we've just got to rein him in at times.

"But post-Christmas he'll be fine and in the main group again."

Viney will continue to train "off-legs" for the rest...

Cranston has shed an incredible 28kg in the past three years, including eight in the off-season, to present fitter and keener for the start of another arduous pre-season campaign preparing for the opening round in early February.

"I wasn't fit enough when I started AFLW, but I'm building on that and I'm getting there. I still think there's a lot more to give and, with the time frame I had, I think I've done everything possible so far," she said before training at the...

Spargo takes it in his stride

IT’S BEEN a little more than a week since Charlie Spargo was Melbourne’s first selection, at No.29, in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft.

Since that time, he has experienced a big, but rewarding time at his new club.

“It’s been a pretty reasonable adjustment. It’s been a whirlwind few days with the draft last Friday (November 24) and then moving [back] down on Sunday [from Albury] and moving in with a host family, but they’ve been great,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“One of the players is temporarily in the house that I’m in, Billy Stretch, and he’s been really good in taking me to training and helping me out with whatever I need.
