"Met with Adelaide today and we did make some progress today. We've both got the intent to get a deal done, which is positive, and hopefully we can do that in the next few weeks," Mahoney said.

Melbourne has already stated it is prepared to give up its first and second-round selection in this year's NAB AFL Draft to land Lever.

Adelaide list manager Justin Reid didn't rule out the possibility of talking to clubs about Lever.

"We've got good dialogue with Melbourne but we'll just see where that gets to over the next fortnight," Reid said.

"There's still another...

AFLFA Fans of the Year announced

MELBOURNE and Adelaide fans dominated this year’s AFL Fans Association Fan of the Year Awards.

The Demon Army is Supporter Group of the Year.

Crows Supporter Group stalwart Annie Green is AFLFA Female Fan of the Year and Demon Army member Ryan Sinclair is Male Fan of the Year.

AFL Fans Association president Gerry Eeman says the worthy winners faced stiff competition from other diehards who spend many voluntary hours working to support their clubs.

“These are the only awards that specifically recognise the unparalleled dedication and hard work of AFL fans around Australia,” Gerry says. “So many do an amazing job and bring such colour to the game.

They also work hard behind the scenes organising social events and fundraisers.

“Congratulations to all our winners and to all fans who contributed in 2017.”

Every moment matters, says Bartlett

Best and Fairest: Glen Bartlett President Glen Bartlett speaks at the 2017 Best and Fairest

CHAIRMAN Glen Bartlett says he is adamant Melbourne's list will deliver success.

Speaking at Crown Palladium on Monday night, Bartlett said there was plenty to like about 2017 despite a disappointing finish.

"When I do reflect on the year, there have been some great moments on the field - whether it’s the great win against Adelaide at Adelaide Oval, our last second win against West Coast at Subiaco, our first win against the Saints since 2006, or whether it was watching the team play an exciting brand of football. Our performances this year, we showed why this group of young players can and will deliver sustained success that we are all after," he said.

"The club also showed great resilience this year, whether it's dealing with significant injuries or suspension or some of the personal...

Interviews the key at Combine: Stinear

MELBOURNE women’s coach Mick Stinear says the individual player interviews will be the most important component from this year’s NAB AFL Women’s Draft Combine.

Stinear said getting to know the players was critical in the lead-up to the NAB AFL Women’s Draft, which will be held later in October.

“It’s one thing to be able to watch a player in action throughout the year, but another to meet them and get to know them better and understand them,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“It’s good to have a chat with them to see where they’re at with their football and whether we could see them fitting into the Melbourne environment – and if they’d be a quality Melbourne person.

“The quality of players are only improving and will continue to get better.”

Melbourne has six spots vacant on its 2018 AFLW list.

Four will be used at the NAB AFL Women’s Draft and two at the NAB AFL Women’s Rookie Draft,...

Trade wrap: Let the games begin

Lever's Dee Day: let the games begin

Demons fans shouldn't celebrate just yet, but Jake Lever is one step closer to swapping his Crows guernsey for the red and blue.

On Tuesday afternoon Lever formally requested a trade, and later told Channel Seven his preferred new club is Melbourne.

What happens next

The Demons are believed to have offered the defender a four-year deal worth at least $3.2 million.

In acknowledging Lever's request, a Crows statement mentioned his wish to join a Victorian club, saying they were "extremely disappointed" and want full value for Lever.

So Adelaide's statement can be read: 'Demons - if you want Lever, you'd better pay up or another Victorian club, possibly Collingwood, will'.

How the deal gets done

  • The Crows will ask for Melbourne's first-round pick, No.10 overall, and their 2018 first-round selection, on the assumption this is likely to fall later than...
