Trade wrap: Let the games begin

Lever's Dee Day: let the games begin

Demons fans shouldn't celebrate just yet, but Jake Lever is one step closer to swapping his Crows guernsey for the red and blue.

On Tuesday afternoon Lever formally requested a trade, and later told Channel Seven his preferred new club is Melbourne.

What happens next

The Demons are believed to have offered the defender a four-year deal worth at least $3.2 million.

In acknowledging Lever's request, a Crows statement mentioned his wish to join a Victorian club, saying they were "extremely disappointed" and want full value for Lever.

So Adelaide's statement can be read: 'Demons - if you want Lever, you'd better pay up or another Victorian club, possibly Collingwood, will'.

How the deal gets done

  • The Crows will ask for Melbourne's first-round pick, No.10 overall, and their 2018 first-round selection, on the assumption this is likely to fall later than...

Crow Lever asks for trade to Melbourne

ADELAIDE star Jake Lever has asked to be traded to Melbourne after receiving a four-year offer that would have seen him become the highest-paid Crow, had the club matched it.

Lever informed Adelaide on Tuesday of his intention to return home to Victoria after months of speculation about his future.

Crows football boss Brett Burton told NAB AFL Trade Radio paying Lever the amount he will leave for would have been irresponsible.

"Our offer was a very lucrative offer, and one that would place him very high in our footy club. If we were to match what Melbourne are offering, it would have made him the highest-paid player at our footy club," Burton said.

"We've got a responsibility to the rest of our playing group, and also our fans, to make sure that we not only be fair to our players, but also maintain a list that's capable of creating success."

Lever's departure has been long on the...

MELBOURNE has confirmed it wants to secure Adelaide defender Jake Lever in the upcoming trade period.

“Our intentions are to get the deal done,” Mahoney said on 1116 SEN on Wednesday.

“We’re really happy that Jake has made this decision. It’s a role that we need to be filled in our defence. He’s a young guy … he’s flexible and he’s a leader.

“We’re really happy that he’s decided to join Melbourne footy club as his preferred destination.

“We’ve looked at other deals that have been done for similar talented young players and we’ve got a deal on the table with Adelaide right now that involves our first and second round picks. We think that is...

Top prospect kicks perfect score

BRISBANE Lions academy prospect Connor Ballenden showed his excellent foot skills for a key position prospect by posting a perfect score in the kicking test at the NAB AFL Draft Combine.

The 199cm teenager, who could attract a top-20 bid on draft night next month, had a perfect score with his six kicks, recording a 30/30 total.

He was the only player to ace the kicking test, which sees prospects kick to targets at different distances on their preferred and non-preferred foot.

Jack Higgins, Angus Schumacher, Jack Payne, Hayden McLean, Jackson Ross and Ned Reeves all scored 29 to be among the best performed as the testing got underway at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

Ballenden had an inconsistent year and has been used in a number of different roles throughout the season – including in the ruck and across half-back – after starting the year viewed as a possible top-five...

Midfield depth a focus: Taylor

Draft Combine: Jason Taylor Recruitment Manager Jason Taylor talks about the draft and trade period

STOCKING the midfield with further talent is among Melbourne’s aim this trade and draft period, says national recruiting manager Jason Taylor.

Speaking at Etihad Stadium on Thursday, the third of the four-day NAB AFL Draft Combine, Taylor said the club had a few needs this recruiting season.

“The key defensive post, with Jake Lever nominating us, is one area that we’re looking at,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“Also, I think that we need to continue to bolster the midfield and potentially some smaller forwards.

“As a [list management] group, we need to be across the depth of the draft pool, as well as what’s out there in free agency and trade markets.”

With the recent departure of long-serving ruckman Jake Spencer, Taylor said the club would assess its ruck options, but backed in...

Watts' cycle 'hasn't changed': Goodwin

JACK Watts and Melbourne are stuck in a rut, having gone through a cycle that "hasn't changed", Demons coach Simon Goodwin says.

Meanwhile, NAB AFL Trade Radio reported on Monday that Sydney was interested in the 26-year-old.

The forward has fallen out of favour, a little over a year after signing a contract that saw him contracted until the end of 2019.

Since being drafted at No.1 in 2008, Watts has lined up in 153 matches and booted 143 goals.

Goodwin told Melbourne radio station RSN on Monday not much had changed with Watts, despite having a career-best season in 2016 and finishing fifth in the club championship.

"This is obviously a situation where it's been going on for a long period of time. We're eight or nine years into a career and there's been a similar lot of expectation and a lot of pressure has been placed on both the Melbourne footy club and Jack over a long period of...

Trade winds: Club in Dees' Lever swoop?

RICHMOND is basking in the glow of its premiership but Adelaide is moving quickly in a bid to go one better next year, with the NAB AFL Trade Period to begin next Monday.

The free agency window starts even earlier, on Friday.

AFL.com.au's Trade Winds will provide a round-up of the latest action every morning until the end of the Trade Period on Thursday, October 19.

Lever to the Dees no certainty?

It's been seen as almost certain that young Adelaide defender Jake Lever will move to Melbourne, but The Advertiser says that is no certainty.

Collingwood is poised to be a "spoiler" in the race for the star backman.

Adelaide wants two first-round selections for the 21-year-old and the Magpies might be prepared to offer that up earlier than the Demons do.

Lever, who made the Virgin Australia All Australian squad of 40 this season, has admitted family ties in Victoria is a lure for him to...

Melbourne makes further list change

MELBOURNE has delisted midfielder/half-forward Ben Kennedy, bringing the total number of list changes to five since the end of the 2017 season.

Kennedy joins former co-captain Jack Trengove, long-serving ruckman Jake Spencer, rookie Mitch White and young tall forward Liam Hulett as other recent players to depart the club.

Selected at No.19 in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft, Kennedy played 25 games for Collingwood from 2013-15 before crossing over to Melbourne at the end of the 2015 season.

After playing 15 games for the red and blue in 2016, Kennedy was unable to secure a spot in the senior side in 2017.

General manager of football operations Josh Mahoney thanked Kennedy for his service over the last two years.

“After a solid first year at the club, Ben was unable to break into our AFL team in 2017,” Mahoney told melbournefc.com.au.

“We commend Ben on the way he handled himself through the year,...
