Moorabbin return a boost for players: Richo

AFL 2017 Media - NAB AFL Draft

St Kilda Coach Alan Richardson at the NAB AFL Draft.

The first stage of St Kilda's redevelopment of its spiritual home at Moorabbin is coming closer to completion as the club prepares to move from Seaford in April.

While the football department is expected to be fully operational by the first month of next season, stage one overall is expected to be completed by September.

The second and final stage of the redevelopment will feature facilities for community football.

That part of the development could go ahead straight after stage one is finished, but funding needs to be secured first.

In 2010, the Saints moved to Seaford but that has proven a failure, with discontent over its distance from Melbourne among the issues surrounding the venue.

St Kilda has continued doing its final training session before a game at Moorabbin. While the oval is in excellent shape, meetings took place in...

Saints hit the phones

FreemanHeadsDown.jpg

Armed with a headset and a list of numbers, the Saints picked up the phone to talk to you.

Did you get a missed call on Wednesday evening? If so, you're going to wish you answered it.

Armed with a list of numbers and a headset, 18 of the Saints' emerging young contingent took to the phones with the aim of talking all things membership.

Naturally, competition took over and the boys were split into three groups - Team Red, Team White and Team Black - the aim of the game being who could bring the most members on board for 2018.

His nickname may be 'Freezer', but Nathan Freeman was anything but icy on the phone. The charismatic midfielder was straight to work, quickly winning over hearts through the landline before introducing teammate Brandon White to the fold.

There was a lot of Ron Burgundy about Freeman on Wednesday night.

Freeman's hard work helped Team White surge to an early...

How to handle the expectation of being a top 10 pick

AFL 2017 Media - NAB AFL Draft

New Saints Hunter Clark (left) and Nick Coffield at last Friday night's NAB AFL Draft.

St Kilda young gun Jack Billings is well aware of the expectations associated with being a high draft pick, given he was taken at the top end of a draft amid GWS star Josh Kelly and Western Bulldogs premiership heroes Tom Boyd and Marcus Bontempelli.

Billings, who produced a stunning breakout season in 2017 to emerge as one of the more damaging half-forwards in the game, is well placed to help St Kilda’s two newest top 10 picks, Hunter Clark (No. 7) and Nick Coffield (No. 8), cope with the pressure of being a high draft pick.

“I think first and foremost, you’ve just got to work as hard as you can when you get to the club,” Billings told the Inside St Kilda Podcast this week.

“I think the thing that helped me with the extra expectations and outside noise was when I arrived at the Saints I was...

Geary reigns supreme in the summer rain

geary3kwin.jpg

St Kilda Captain Jarryn Geary leads the pack home at Friday morning's 3km time-trial.

Jarryn Geary has continued his reign as endurance king by winning the 3km time-trial at Linen House Centre on Friday morning, although he wasn’t the only elder statesmen to impress in the rain.

Stalwart defender Sam Gilbert – the oldest player on St Kilda’s list – has returned for his 13th pre-season in great condition, staying with the lead pack the whole way before finishing equal 5th.

Despite heavy rain across the morning and a forecast of much more over the next 48 hours, the Saints were still put through their paces as the rain tumbled down in Seaford.

Geary opened up a gap between himself and a chasing mob for most of the second half of the run, before young midfielder Ed Phillips reduced the margin in the closing stages, but not enough to dethrone the captain.

Path to 2018 starts in the Tiwi Islands for St Kilda leaders

AFL 2017 Round 21 - Melbourne v St Kilda

Saints star Josh Bruce takes a hanger against Melbourne late in the season.

Before they rolled up their sleeves to start another summer at Linen House Centre, St Kilda’s leadership group spent the first week of the pre-season in the Northern Territory putting plans in place for 2018.

While the rest of the list remained in Seaford last week, Saints Coach Alan Richardson, Director of Coaching Danny Sexton, Captain Jarryn Geary and the rest of the leaders headed to the Tiwi Islands, in the first stage of life without celebrated leaders Nick Riewoldt and Leigh Montagna.

Star forward Josh Bruce said the trip provided the leaders with the opportunity to work out the path the group wants to pursue, as the Saints plot a return to September and beyond, while also including plenty of punishment in 35-degree heat.

“We knuckled down with a bit of the way it looks from here on out for the Saints...
