Draft Wrap: Ring-a-ding-Ling

Matthew Ling's highlight reel Check out our first pick at the 2017 National Draft, Matthew Ling, in action.

AFL 2017 U18 Championship - Vic C Headshots

Matthew Ling (Pick 14) will join Tom McCartin (Pick 33) and Ryley Stoddart (Pick 53) at the Sydney Swans following the 2017 National Draft.

The Sydney Swans have added to their exciting crop of young talent, recruiting three new players at Friday night’s AFL Draft in Sydney.

With the Swans’ first selection, No. 14 overall, the Club swopped on left-footed rebounding defender Matthew Ling from the Geelong Falcons.

The 18-year-old, measuring 183cm tall and weighing 75kg, is lightning quick who has great vision and clean hands.

Joining Ling in Sydney will be school mate and Falcons teammate, Tom McCartin (pick 33), who is an exciting key position prospect.

The younger brother of St Kilda’s former No. 1 draft pick, Paddy McCartin, is a strong-marking, mobile forward who impressed at...

AFL 2017 U18 Championships - Vic C v SA

Matthew Ling in action for Victoria Country in this year's U18 National Championships.

"Kennedy wins the hard ball and gives the quick hands to Parker. Parker's tackled but shrugs his arms free to flick the footy to Hannebery. Hannebery, ducking and weaving, evades a couple of opponents which paves the way for Ling..."

It is a scenario which has probably played out in Matthew Ling's head a million times over since the 2017 draftee learned of his fate during Friday night's National Draft.

Primarily a defender during his time with the Geelong Falcons, Ling seems destined though to one day step into the Sydney Swans midfield and provide the Club with some quality outside class.

Blessed with serious pace and silky skills, the 18-year-old should complement the Swans' contested...

McCartin, a 193cm and 87kg key forward from the Geelong Falcons, was one of three new players the Sydney Swans welcomed to the football club during Friday night's National Draft.

Ryley Stoddart wasn't always the line-breaking defender he'd been touted as ahead of Friday night's National Draft.

He'd played forward for a bulk of his junior football, but a move to defence shortly after landing on the Eastern Ranges' list earlier this year slingshotted the 18-year-old under the noses of AFL scouts and into draft calculations.

It was Ranges coach Darren Bewick who pulled the trigger but it was Stoddart who repaid the faith and now it's the Sydney Swans who will enjoy the spoils after swooping on the talented youngster with their third-round selection (pick 53).

Hayward's helluva week

'Best and worst night of my life' Will Hayward recalls his draft night and how much he's developed over the last 12 months.

AFL 2016 Media - Ben Ainsworth and Will Hayward

Will Hayward had media commitments to keep his mind off draft night.

Nearly 12 months has come and gone since Will Hayward's "best and worst" night of his life.

The best, because his AFL dream was about to be realised, and the worst, because that feeling of the unknown often got the better of him.

His wait for the 2016 National Draft was, for these reasons, an agonising one.

He was smack  bang in the middle of his Year 12 exams but the sheer excitement of potentially landing on an AFL list mixed with a feeling of dread if that dream didn't come true produced an unhelpful concoction and disrupted his focus.

"Leading up to the draft I was, to be honest, a bit of a nervous wreck," Hayward said.

"I didn't know where I was going to end up and there were a few...

Young duo locked in

Papley re-signs Hear from Tom Papley after he re-signs for 2 more years.

20171123_hewettpapp_p.jpg

George Hewett and Tom Papley celebrate a goal against Richmond in 2017 with Gary Rohan at the MCG.

Exciting Swans duo George Hewett and Tom Papley have committed to Sydney, signing two-year contract extensions with the club.

In a boost for the team in the first week of pre-season training, the pair will now remain in red and white until at least the end of 2020.

The Swans recruited Hewett, who was the youngest player taken in his draft class, with pick 32 in the 2013 AFL Draft.

Hailing from the country town of Port Broughton in South Australia, Hewett settled in well to life in Sydney but had to bide his time learning his craft in the NEAFL for the first two seasons on the Swans’ list.

Called up to make his debut in Round 1, 2016 against Collingwood, Hewett took his chance at the elite level, playing 48 games out...

Irishman inks new deal

20171122_oriordan_hero.jpg

Colin O'Riordan gets a handball away during a JLT series match against North Melbourne.

Irish import Colin O'Riordan has signed a new two-year contract extension, tying the Irishman to the Sydney Swans until at least the end of 2019.

And the new deal comes packaged with a senior elevation, with O'Riordan one of two rookies who'll be promoted by the Sydney Swans at Friday night's National Draft.

The Sydney Swans will use their last two picks in the draft (#84 and #92) to elevate O'Riordan and Lewis Melican, while Robbie Fox, Toby Pink and Ben Ronke will be retained on the rookie list for season 2018.

Recruited as a Category B Rookie at the end of 2015, O'Riordan has spent the past two seasons honing his new craft under Rhyce Shaw's tutelage in the NEAFL.

The junior Gaelic star repaid the Swans' faith almost immediately by impressing the coaches with his work ethic and professionalism...
