Beatson previews the draft Head of Recruitment and List Strategy Kinnear Beatson provides us with an update on the where the coaches, recruiters and playing list sits ahead of the 2017 National Draft.

AFL 2013 Rd 14 - Sydney v Carlton

Premiership midfielder Ryan O'Keefe, taken with pick #56 in the 1999 National Draft, proved one of the most fruitful selections in the Club's draft history.

If there was such a thing as Sydney Swans Draft Lotto the lucky numbers in numeric order would be 5, 8, 21, 40, 43 and 56, with the supplementary numbers 3 and 29.

They have been the Swans’ lucky numbers in the National Draft since it began in 1986.

Measuring each selection number by the number of games it has produced for the club, selection #8 is top of the list at 604. This has seen the club recruit Jude Bolton (325 games), Jared Crouch (223), Brad Tunbridge (50) and Dion Scott (6).

What is the key for young players, such as boys in the QBE Sydney Swans Academy, who want to be drafted to an AFL club?

What are the ingredients needed to build a playing list capable of challenging for an AFL premiership?

If there is anyone who knows the answer to those questions, it’s Kinnear Beatson, the Manager, Recruiting and List Strategy, for the Sydney Swans.

Kinnear started his AFL recruiting career with the Brisbane Lions, where he worked from 1994 to 2005. He’s been at the Swans since 2006.

In his time at the two clubs, he’s overseen the recruitment of players involved in seven Grand Finals, for four premierships (three with Brisbane and one with the Swans).

In an interview with Sydney Swans Media, Kinnear reveals how the Swans recruiters go about their business in a highly competitive sporting landscape, and how they work with the Swans Academy.

In part two, he outlines...

Young Swans return for day one

Pre-season kicks off Take a look at some highlights from day one of our 2017/18 pre-season campaign.

AFL 2017 Training - Sydney 201117

Young gun Isaac Heeney impressed on day one of pre-season training.

The Sydney Swans second-to-fourth-year players returned to the training track on Monday morning to begin preparations for season 2018.

Gloomy skies and ominous clouds greeted the players as they took part in skills sessions broken up by running blocks around Darlinghurst's Weigall Fields.

The rain came then went. Regardless, the moisture and ensuing humid conditions failed to dampen the boys' enthusiasm and work ethic during the two-hour session which was followed by gym work back at the SCG.

Isaac Heeney and Callum Mills led the charge on the opening day which featured players in their second, third and fourth years of football.

Their more experienced teammates return in a fortnight's time.

The second-to-fourth-year players returned to the track on Monday for day one of pre-season training.

Wet and humid conditions greeted the young players as they got a head start on their senior teammates, who are due back in a fortnight's time.

The playing group, around 20-strong, hit the ground running at Weigall Fields in Darlinghurst with timed sprints but were saved by blocks of skill work.

Draft prospects… 5 days to go

20171120_uniacke_1.jpg

Luke Davies-Uniacke in action for Vic Metro in the U18 championships.

We take a closer look at some of the potential first round draftees ahead of the National Draft to be held in Sydney on November 24.

The Club will enter the National Draft with live selections at pick 14, 33 and 51.

The following are four of the potential draft prospects predicted by experts to be selected in the first round.

Luke Davies-Uniacke – Dandenong Stingrays / Vic Country
Height: 187cm
Weight: 85kg
Position: Midfielder

A graduate of the NAB AFL Academy who is a strong-bodied medium midfielder with a good burst of speed from stoppages, he uses his excellent vision and decision-making to set up play. Is also good overhead and strong one on one as shown for Vic Country across the NAB AFL U18 Championships. Very impressive again in the All Stars game at the MCG on Grand Final day with his 22 possessions, but...

The Draft: A brief history of our '17 selections

Brett O’Farrell and Will Sangster.

They’re not household names, for good reason, having combined for only 10 games across three seasons, but they once played for the Sydney Swans and for this reason remain an important part of the Club’s fabric.

We must flip through the history books to November of 1996 for when this wide-eyed pair arrived in Sydney ready to tackle the rigours of AFL football.

It was in that draft where the Swans last had picks 14 and 33 in the same pool.

With pick 4 already banked the Swans improved their say in the draft by securing the extra selections - plus Mark Orchard (41 games, 1997-98) and Ben Wilson (4 games in 1998) - from Collingwood in a huge play for Anthony Rocca.

An extremely homesick Rocca played 22 games in two seasons for the red and white before upping the ante over his desire to join his big brother, Saverio, at the Pies.

And, as the story goes,...
