Western Bulldogs skipper Bob Murphy says that while he was pleased with the way his teammates presented themselves when returning to pre-season training after the summer holiday period, maintaining the hunger to stay in peak condition throughout the season will be the key to success for the side in 2017.

Speaking on SEN's breakfast program, Murphy said the pressure for places in the side will help the players maintain that hunger.

"As a leader of the footy club I was on edge for the start of pre-season just to see how guys came back and we passed that test with flying colours. The guys were fit,...

For Ellie Blackburn, the Western Bulldogs' inaugural AFL Women's season ended on wonderful note, the midfielder splitting the big sticks with a long bomb as the siren sounded to finish the Bulldogs match against GWS and draw a curtain on a season full of moments to be cherished.

Blackburn's goal capped off a 32-point win over the Giants, the Bulldogs' second of the season after they had won the opening match against Fremantle by exactly the same margin.

That first-round match is a highlight that will live long in Blackburn's memory.

"Round 1 was a pretty special moment for us. Having the first game at...

Veteran journalist Mike Sheahan rounded out his list of top 50 AFL players on SEN this week, with Bulldog Marcus Bontempelli named in the top three.

Only 2016 Brownlow Medallist Patrick Dangerfield and Sydney superstar Lance Franklin were ranked ahead of Bontempelli by Sheahan as he unveiled his top the SEN Breakfast program. Sheahan's annual pre-season top-50 player prognostications have been the subject of debate for more than two decades.

Bontempelli, an All-Australian in 2016, became the fourth Western Bulldogs player to be included in Sheahan's top 50, after Dale Morris, Easton Wood and Liam...

Western Bulldogs Jordan Roughead and Ellie Blackburn took part in a training drill with a difference this morning.

With VU Whitten Oval hosting Channel Nine's Today show for the day, Roughead and Blackburn took part in an exercise that saw presenters Karl Stefanovic and Tim Gilbert dunked in an oversized tub of water.

It was all for a good cause, though, with a $1000 being donated to the Royal Children's Hospital as each host went under.

Roughead was charged with the task of dunking Stefanovic while Blackburn's duty was to see Gilbert get wet in a handball drill...

Groves said that he was pleased to see the players get a chance to celebrate their hard work with a season-ending victory.

Dogs finish AFLW season with victory

3613197 dogs-finish-aflw-season-with-victory

THE WESTERN Bulldogs have avoided the inaugural NAB AFL Women's wooden spoon with a dominant second half to down Greater Western Sydney by 32 points.

The Bulldogs kicked five goals to one after half-time to secure a comfortable 7.10 (52) to 3.2 (20) victory in Canberra, ensuring the Giants finished on the bottom of the ladder.

After a goalless first quarter, the Giants kicked the first two goals of the game early in the second quarter and controlled of most of the play.

Coming into the final round with more scoring shots than any other side, the Bulldogs' were again plagued by inaccuracy, kicking five behinds before registering their first goal.

Midfielder Ellie Blackburn was dominant for the Bulldogs, gathering 25 disposals and kicking a goal on the final siren.

GWS marquee Emma Swanson continued her good form since returning from a hamstring injury, picking up 18 disposals and four...

AFL 2005 Rd 2 - Western Bulldogs v Melbourne

Patrick Bowden for the Bulldogs marks in front of Paul Wheatley for the Demons during the round two AFL match between the Western Bulldogs and the Melbourne Demons at the Telstra Dome April 2, 2005 in Melbourne, Australia.

What better day than St Patrick's Day to take a look at the Patricks to have represented the Western Bulldogs over the years.

There have been eight Patricks,   Pats and Paddys at the Bulldogs since the club joined the V/AFL in 1925 and, interestingly, six have links to other clubs.

Paddy O'Brien who played 15 games for Footscray in 1925-26, had previously made 167 appearances for Carlton, while Paddy Scanlan played an even 100 games for South Melbourne before a two-year, 33-game stint at the Kennel in 1997-98.

Pat Cahill played 47 games for Footscray between 1939 and 1947 before playing a further three with St Kilda.

The Bulldogs' most prolific Patrick, in terms...

St Kilda and Melbourne have been widely tipped as the big improvers in 2017, but asked to decide between them, the 18 AFL captains believe the Saints are better placed for September football this year.

The results of the annual pre-season captains' survey have been released with 11 captains nominating St Kilda as finalists this year compared to six for Melbourne.

The Saints finished ninth last season with 12 wins, while Melbourne finished 10th with 10 wins.

Sydney was the only club unanimously selected to play finals in 2017, while crosstown Greater Western Sydney was the clear premiership favourite.

The captains were asked which seven other teams, apart...

Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon has paid an emotional tribute to the people who kept the AFL club going before last year's historic premiership.

Gordon officially took possession of the 2016 flag at Thursday night's AFL season launch in Melbourne.

The Bulldogs came from seventh, winning four finals, to claim their first premiership since 1954 and only the second in club history.

"This flag has been a long time coming and we will take good care of it," Gordon said in his acceptance speech.

Gordon added it had taken "a certain character" to support the Bulldogs, who traditionally...

Into The Fury: The tale of the 2016 flag Peter Dickson's 'Into the Fury' is a compelling look at the Western Bulldogs' 2016 Grand Final win, revealed at the 2017 AFL Season Launch.

AFL 2016 Toyota AFL Grand Final - Sydney v Western Bulldogs

The Bulldogs' triumph highlighted in this year's AFL season launch film.

LUKE Beveridge calmly and clinically imploring his players before and during last year’s Grand Final to overcome adversity and create “our storyline” is among the key moments in this year’s AFL season launch film.

Titled Into the Fury, the nearly-13-minute film is written in three acts and chronicles the Western Bulldogs’ history of heartache – including the threat of merger, loss after loss in big games and early last season, the serious knee injury to captain Bob Murphy – through to their 2016 premiership triumph over Sydney.

Filmmaker Peter Dickson sifted through more than 50 hours of footage captured from vantage points in and...

Western Bulldogs defender Matthew Boyd will wear a helmet for the next month as he strives to overcome a nasty ear injury in time to play in round one against Collingwood.

Boyd was injured in last Thursday night’s JLT Community Series game against Gold Coast when Suns forward Peter Wright accidentally elbowed his right ear.

Boyd's ear was torn so badly in the incident one of the Bulldogs doctors compared the injury to a dog bite.

Captain and coach ready to set sail again

3606477 captain-and-coach-ready-to-set-sail-again

Western Bulldogs' captain Bob Murphy believes that coach Luke Beveridge has created the right balance in preparing his side for 2017 by presenting it as another new journey on which they can embark on together.

In his annual address to the Club’s Season Launch on Tuesday night, Beveridge emphasised the importance of putting past achievements in perspective and focusing on what’s ahead.

"This is an optimistic time of year, as it should be, and I think Luke got the balance right [on Tuesday] night," Murphy told SEN on Wednesday morning.

While the Bulldogs will be coming into the season with a different status to previous seasons, Murphy said the players will be looking for inspiration in the fact that they were now perceived as the 'hunted' rather than the 'hunter'.

"Nothing is for certain in an AFL season, as much as we all love to make predictions and read into form [based on] what...
