The Sydney Roosters have launched legal action against a sponsor that withdrew its backing in the wake of this year's cocaine scandal, leading to fan favourite Shaun Kenny-Dowall being shown the door from the club.

In another twist to the recreational drugs storm that surfaced before and during the representative round, the Tricolours are headed to the courts with Infinity Group Australia, months after the firm pulled its sponsorship of the title contenders.

Sydney Roosters learn harsh lessons from Melbourne Storm defeat - The Sydney Morning Herald

The Sydney Roosters took everything but two competition points out of their daunting road trip to Melbourne on Saturday, but halfback Mitchell Pearce says tough lessons learned from an uncharacteristic late fade-out should realign the club's premiership charge.

Luke Keary's second-half field goal had the Roosters headed for a one-point win over the likely minor premiers, before their defensive line was finally breached by Joe Stimson just four minutes from time to hand the Bondi club a second-straight loss.

Melbourne Storm edge past Sydney Roosters in tight contest - Stuff.co.nz

Jahrome Hughes of the Storm is challenged by Mitchell Aubusson of the Roosters.

They have one hand firmly on the NRL minor premiership but Melbourne skipper Cameron Smith said there wasn't too many happy faces in the Storm sheds following their last gasp 16-13 win over the Sydney Roosters.

The Storm snatched the three-point win an enthralling and at times bizarre contest fitting of a top-of-the table clash at AAMI Park.

Melbourne only need one more win from their remaining three matches to secure the JJ Giltinan Shield but Smith said the near-miss was a reminder the premiership race was far from over.

Melbourne Storm move one step closer to minor premiership with 16-13 win over Roosters - Herald Sun

MUTED celebrations in the Melbourne Storm sheds last night were telling.

While Storm tightened their grip on the minor premiership by defeating Sydney Roosters 16-13, the review is likely to unearth problems which could bring the powerhouse undone in September.

Storm ball handling errors, admittedly in slippery conditions, bookended the come-from-behind victory, but the ladder leader and raging premiership favourite found a way to deliver.

CASH: Why are sponsors deserting the Maroons

The Roosters looked set for a season-defining victory when Luke Keary calmly converted his first ever field goal to give the visitors the lead.

Cooper Cronk had his chance to knot the scores again smothered by lunging Mitchell Pearce, only for the ball to ricochet to Billy Slater for the repeat set.

Joe Stimson crashed over for the matchwinner.
