Wood opens up on Supercars step back - Motorsport.com - Motorsport.com, Edition: Global

4323425 wood-opens-up-on-supercars-step-back-motorsport-com-motorsport-com-edition-global

Dale Wood says he's hoping to bring some fresh enjoyment to his racing next season, as he scales back from a full-time Supercars drive and hits the co-driver market.

The former Super2 champion ended his career as a full-time Supercars driver at last weekend's Newcastle round, having confirmed back in October that he wouldn't continue beyond the end of this season.

It spells the end of a four-year stint in the main game, during which he drove for Brad Jones Racing, Nissan Motorsport, and most recently Erebus Motorsport.

Reflecting on the decision to step back from a full-time drive, Wood says the primary motivation is to ease the ongoing pressure of finding backing – which he hopes will help him enjoy his motor racing a bit more.

"A lot of people have said 'oh you're retiring', but I'm not retiring. I'm still relatively young," he told Motorsport.com.

"But for me, things weren't...

Motorsport: Jamie Whincup wins record seventh Supercars title - The Sydney Morning Herald

Jamie Whincup has won an unprecedented seventh Supercars title after Scott McLaughlin's championship dream turned to ruin during an epic finale in Newcastle.

The Holden superstar celebrated just his fourth win of the season as McLaughlin squandered a 78-point series lead and pole position with three penalties during yesterday's 250-kilometre race.

McLaughlin kept on fighting and got into a title-winning position, then was hit with a third penalty for what appeared to be a telling pass with three laps to go, with the 25-second penalty confirming Whincup's title by 21 points.

McLaughlin's flying start from pole position wasn't a portent of things to come. He was penalised for speeding on his first entry to pit lane early in the race.

Scott McLaughlin has capitalised on Jamie Whincup's heartbreak, with the Ford star poised to claim his first Supercars title after a dramatic race in Newcastle.

Whincup's quest for an unprecedented seventh championship is hanging by a thread after steering damage which  led to a 23rd-place finish in the penultimate race of the championship.

Starting from fifth on the grid  and 30 championship points ahead of polesitter McLaughlin, Whincup's Holden Commodore made contract with Michael Caruso's Nissan Altima on the opening lap.

Shortly after that Whincup narrowly avoided a three-car pile-up involving Dale Wood, Taz Douglas and Jason Bright which forced the safety car on to the track. But the halt in proceedings wasn't long enough to save Whincup.
