QMMF leader in motorcycle sport in region, says president - Gulf Times

By Sports Reporter/Doha

Qatar Motor and Motorcycling Federation (QMMF) President Abdulrahman al-Mannai has praised his federation for being the leader for motorcycle sport in the Middle East.
Since its inception 30 years ago, QMMF has been a trendsetter for two-wheeler events in the Middle East. The Losail International Circuit is the only track in the region to host MotoGP, while it also conducts the World Superbike Championship every year.
Last week, during the 2017 FIM World Champions gala in Spain, FIM chief Vito Ippolito presented a memento to al-Mannai to mark QMMF’s 30 years of contribution to develop motorsport in Qatar. The 62-year-old Ippolito had commended Qatar’s initiatives to promote the sport in the country.
Speaking on the sidelines of the World Touring Car Championship at Losail yesterday, al-Mannai said: “Qatar has been ahead of everyone in the region when it comes...

World Superbikes 2017: what to expect at the final round in Qatar this weekend - Telegraph.co.uk

The 2017 World Superbike season draws to a close this weekend under the floodlights of the Losail International Circuit in Qatar. With the championship sewn up by Jonathan Rea two rounds ago, all eyes will be on the battle for second place overall which, as it was last year, is between Rea’s Kawasaki team-mate Tom Sykes and Ducati’s Chaz Davies.

Last year it was Sykes who prevailed, though not without the assistance of his team-mate. With Davies leading the final race of the season and Sykes in third behind Rea, it was Davies who was heading for the runner-up spot in the championship. Rea, however, slowed to allow Sykes through, meaning the Yorkshireman finished just two points ahead of Davies in the final standings.

But it could be a different story this year, with Rea going on record as saying he won’t help his team-mate this time around.

Should Davies and Sykes score the same...

Baz back in World Superbike with Althea BMW - crash.net

Loris Baz has confirmed his expected return to the World Superbike championship after signing for Althea BMW for the 2018 season.

The French rider has spent the past three campaigns in MotoGP having moved from World Superbikes at the end of 2014 from Kawasaki – a switch which paved the way for Jonathan Rea to join the Japanese manufacturer – and is set to make a comeback on the factory-backed Althea BMW as a one-rider effort.

Baz, a two-time WSBK race winner, is intrigued to see how he can get up to speed in the production-based series ahead of the new regulations for 2018 but is confident it is a positive move for his future.

“I wanted to find the best solution for my future and I think I have found this in team Althea,” Baz said. “I have known Genesio [Bevilacqua, team owner] for a long time, so we talked and, to be honest, it was very easy to come to an...

WSB: Rea tops opening day of Jerez test - Motorcycle News

Jonathan Rea started off the 2018 World Superbike season where he left off as pre-season testing got underway at Jerez today.

The three-time world champion took to the top of the timesheets from his first laps of the 2.8-mile Andalusian circuit and remained there all day as he continued to improve as Kawasaki test their machine in full 2018-spec for the first time.

Rea’s quickest time of the day, 1’39.650, is quicker than he has ever lapped here on race tyres and just 0.7 off the time he set on qualifying rubber at Jerez 12 months ago to outpace a number of MotoGP machines.

After clocking 42 laps today, Rea won’t be on track on Tuesday as he heads back to London to collect his MBE from the Queen, before heading back to Jerez to complete the test.

KRT’s second rider Tom Sykes followed Rea on the timesheets, some 0.355 back after 57 laps on track while Milwaukee Aprilia’s Eugene...

Sports Personality of the Year 2017: Anthony Joshua, Lewis Hamilton and Harry Kane among 12 stars nominated - The Independent

Anthony Joshua leads the field of nominees for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2017.

The 28-year-old added the WBA and IBO belts to his existing IBF title at Wembley in April when he beat former champion Wladimir Klitschko by knockout in front of 90,000 people before retaining the straps last month against Carlos Takam in Cardiff.

Joshua will go up against 2014 winner Lewis Hamilton after he won the Formula 1 world championship for the fourth time in his career in Mexico last month. Hamilton did so with two races to spare as Mercedes continued their dominance over the sport.

The truth behind Britain, MotoGP and World Superbike - Motor Sport

Many Britons wonder why British riders do so well in WSB and not so well in MotoGP. It’s a long story, says Mat Oxley…

Congratulations are due to Jonathan Rea; heaps of congratulations: his MotoGP-beating lap time at Jerez last week, his history-making third consecutive World Superbike title, his record-breaking points haul, his MBE, his BBC Sports Personality of the Year nomination and much, much more. All richly deserved by a great talent riding at his peak.

But as for all the WSB versus MotoGP talk of recent days – following last week’s combined WSB/MotoGP tests at Jerez – it’s just hypothetical barroom banter. Sam Lowes knows this better than most, having competed in WSB, MotoGP, World Supersport and Moto2. On Saturday he tweeted, “Stupid all the talk about WSB and MotoGP at Jerez. Means nothing. Lots of awesome riders on awesome bikes. Different tyres. Impossible...

MotoGP star Marc Marquez hails the success of World Superbikes king Jonathan Rea - Belfast Live

Five-times MotoGP champion Marc Marquez has hailed the success of World Superbikes king Jonathan Rea.

Ballyclare star Rea clinched his third successive WSB title this year following another incredible season for the Ulsterman.

Marquez - who is looking good to secure another championship this month - says he would love to see Rea make the move into MotoGP.

“It’s impressive what Jonathan has done in Superbikes and it’s clear now that he’s the best rider there by a big margin," Marquez told Belfast Live Sport.

"He won a lot of races this year and has again become a world champion again.

"I hope some day he comes to MotoGP. Or maybe we will meet in some other category at some point. It would be good to get the chance to race against him.”

It is a very fitting tribute from Marquez and only time will tell if they ever do line up together on the grid.

Marquez can clinch his sixth...
