A pint with Michael Rutter... Fast at 40 something! - Motorcycle News

“How long have I even been racing? I think my first year was in 1989,” a perplexed Michael Rutter responded when I asked how he’s still going almost 30 years from that debut season.

I’d hazard a guess that the 17-year-old Michael Rutter that followed in his father’s wheel-tracks didn’t expect to still be racing, and winning, some 28 years later at the ripe old age of 45. At least, that’s how old we think he is – his age may well have got lost in the years of trying to haggle the best possible British Superbike ride as he moved into his mid and late thirties.

From short circuit racing to road racing, British Superbikes to Grand Prix, Rutter has been there and done it all and generally been pretty successful at whatever he’s turned his hand to.

This year, he won the Lightweight race at the Isle of Man TT (as well as the North West 200), his first petrol-powered win on the mountain...

Ducati recently announced the next generation of superbike, the 1,103-cc four-cylinder-powered screamer known as the Panigale V4. The 2018 bike usurps the iconic Panigale 1299 for the throne of Ducati's top superbike, and the limited-edition Speciale comes from the blueprint of a MotoGP bike, featuring a suit of electronic control measures, titanium racing exhaust, an exclusive paint scheme, and 226 horsepower—making it most powerful prooduction superbike in the world.

The price tag would be a negotiation with your dealer, but the base Panigale V4 is expected to run around $25,000. One of only 1,500 planned Panigale V4 Speciales will bleed you for more like $50,000. After a low-key unveiling in Italy, the bike is making its grand public debut at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, and reviewers are wondering if it could be the best superbike...

WSB: Rea tops opening day of Jerez test - Motorcycle News

Jonathan Rea started off the 2018 World Superbike season where he left off as pre-season testing got underway at Jerez today.

The three-time world champion took to the top of the timesheets from his first laps of the 2.8-mile Andalusian circuit and remained there all day as he continued to improve as Kawasaki test their machine in full 2018-spec for the first time.

Rea’s quickest time of the day, 1’39.650, is quicker than he has ever lapped here on race tyres and just 0.7 off the time he set on qualifying rubber at Jerez 12 months ago to outpace a number of MotoGP machines.

After clocking 42 laps today, Rea won’t be on track on Tuesday as he heads back to London to collect his MBE from the Queen, before heading back to Jerez to complete the test.

KRT’s second rider Tom Sykes followed Rea on the timesheets, some 0.355 back after 57 laps on track while Milwaukee Aprilia’s Eugene...

WSB: Sykes takes control in Rea's absence at Jerez - Motorcycle News

Tom Sykes topped the second day of this week’s World Superbike test in Jerez in the absence of team-mate Jonathan Rea.

Rea had to head back to London on Monday evening to collect his MBE, leaving Sykes to fly the flag alone for KRT.

Second fastest on the opening day, Sykes significantly improved his time to 1’39.692, just a whisker of the fastest time Rea had set on day one – 1’39.650.

The Yorkshireman’s time came earlier in the day, with many riders reporting the track to be much greasier in the hottest temperatures in the afternoon than it was on Monday.

Loris Baz was second quickest as he continues to both get to grips with the Althea BMW and riding a superbike after two years in MotoGP. The Frenchman was 0.776 seconds behind Sykes and looked comfortable out on track, commenting he’d found a particularly good feeling with the front end of the S1000RR.

Eugene Laverty, who had been...
